When should you call your local HVAC professionals for service calls? There is a lot of debate over this. Some people feel that they need to schedule a service call soon after their unit has been installed, no matter what, while others will only make an appointment if they have experienced an issue with their system. Here, we will help you figure out the best time to schedule a service call for your unit.
Once a Year Calls for Regular Maintenance
Many HVAC professionals will recommend that you schedule an HVAC service call at least once a year. This is great advice if you live in a state or city with a moderate climate and changing seasons. For instance, in places like the Midwest, air conditioners and heaters are only used a few years of the month. Given this, a once-in-a-year call will suffice. However, if you happen to live in a state like Florida, you’re likely going to be using your AC throughout the year. In such cases, an annual service call may not be enough.
For this reason, we recommend scheduling an HVAC inspection and maintenance at least twice a year — every six months. Not only is this important to keep your unit running like new, but it will also help professionals spot major issues that may lead to expensive breakdowns in the future. So although it is not always necessary, it’s a good idea to schedule an HVAC service call bi-annually.
Maintenance for Older Systems
As your HVAC unit gets older, there’s a pretty good chance that it will require more frequent repairs and maintenance compared to newer models. Remember that if you space out your service appointments too infrequently, your unit may break down during the worst time of the year.
Maintenance May Not Always Be Enough
Of course, there comes a time when even twice-annual maintenance may not be enough to keep your HVAC unit in good working order. Over time, parts will break down, and replacing them can cost a lot more than just buying a new machine. If your system is over ten or fifteen years old and you’re constantly paying for repairs, it may be time to get a new HVAC system installed.
